CE Marking EN 1935

From:CABLE CPR CERTIFICATION  Clicks:219  Time:2024-8-20
The EN1935 standard is among the most ‘seasoned’, in fact it dates back to 2002.

The standard applies ONLY to single-axis hinges.

Multi-axis hinges were first marked by CUAP 04.0512 (passed), then by EAD 020001-00-0405 (passed) and then by EAD 020001-01-0405.

Multi-axis manufacturers carry out the tests according to EADs, and then request to a TAB to draw up an ETA (which is a voluntary CE marking).

CUAP = Common Understanding of Assessment Procedures
EAD = European Assessment Document. When there is no harmonised standard, this document can be established to allow CE marking on a voluntary basis.
ETA = European Technical Assessments
TAB = Technical Assessment Bodies

CLASSIFICATION OF SINGLE-AXIS HINGES

Classification example

2 7 3 0 1 1 1 10

This classification defines a hinge for average use situations subjected to 200 000 cycles, for doors with a mass of up to 60 kg, with no declared fire resistance, with mild corrosion resistance, suitable for use on burglar-resistant doors, and with a grade of 10

Category of use (first digit)

Grade 1 – Light Duty
Grade 2 – Medium Duty
Grade 3 – Heavy Duty
Grade 4 – Heavy Duty

Durability (second digit)

Grade 3: 10 000 cycles
Grade 4: 25 000 cycles
Grade 4: 25 000 cycles
Grade 7: 200 000 cycles

Mass of testing door (third digit)

Suitable for use on fire/smoke doors (fourth digit)

Grade 1: suitable for use on fire/smoke doors subordinateley to a satisfactory assessment of the contribution of the hinges to the fire resistance of the specified fire doors (EN1634-1 or EN1634-2).

Safety (fifth digit)

All hinges must meet the essential requirement of safety in use. Only grade 1 has therefore been identified.

Corrosion resistance (sixth digit)

Five grades of corrosion resistance have been identified in accordance with EN 1670:
grade 0: no corrosion resistance defined;
grade 1: slight resistance
grade 2: moderate resistance
grade 3: high resistance;
Grade 4: very high resistance.

Security – Burglar resistance (7th digit)

Two security grades are identified:
grade 0: not suitable for use on burglar-resistant doors;
grade 1: suitable for use on burglar-resistant doors subordinateley to a satisfactory assessment of the contribution of the hinges to the burglary resistance of the specified burglar-resistant doors.

Hinge grade (eighth digit)

14 hinge grades have been identified

HINGES, INSIGHTS ON FOURTH DIGIT

As seen above, hinges can be defined suitable for use on fire/smoke doors testing according to EN1634-1 or EN1634-2. Many times, hinge manufacturers come to us to carry out tests of their products, which are then used as evidence for the notified body for CE marking of hinges, in order to obtain the fourth digit.

Please note that EN1634-2, although widely used by hinge manufacturers, can only be used on SINGLE AXLE HINGES.

DURABILITY TESTS

Durability tests for hinges are carried out on a special test bench, which is not a finished door. The test bench has a bottom hinge that will not be evaluated. In multi-axis, the bottom hinge is the same as the hinge under test, but will not be evaluated.

HINGES ON FIRE DOORS, CAN THEY BE CHANGED?

Hinges can, in certain cases, be subjected to EXAP. This  is also a case for which manufacturers come to us, to obtain evidence for use in an EXAP, to perhaps allow one of their door manufacturer customers to replace tested hinges with others. For more information, go to the EXAP section by clicking here.

Hinges can also have their own HPS – Hardware Performance Sheet.

SINGLE AXIS HINGES AND FIRE DOORS, WHEN THE CE IS NEEDED?

If the manufacturer of a door uses single-axis hinges which it does not make available on the market as parts separated from doors (spare parts). Hinges shall comply with EN 16034  paragraph 4.5.2.2, which  establishes that single-axis hinges comply with paragraphs 5.4 (durability), 5.5 (corrosion resistance) and 5.8 (design features) of EN 1935:2002.

If the manufacturer of a door uses single-axis hinges that make them available on the market as parts separated from doors (spare parts), the hinges shall be CE marked in relation to EN 1935.

MULTI AXIS HINGES AND FIRE DOORS , WHEN THE CE IS NEEDED?

There is not a harmonised standard dealing with multiaxial hinges because the rule of multiaxial hinges is not included in the current version of Mandate M/101 and will probably not be included in the revision of the mandate or the Standardization Request. A great deal of work is being done on the subject of de-harmonization, with door manufacturers and laboratories that are generally opposed, as national trade barriers, they would be created where qualified hinges would be required in the specifications country by country, with shifting the burden of necessary evidence of testing on door manufacturers.

In any case, it is not possible, and therefore it is not obligatory, to mark CE with respect to a harmonized standard the multiaxial hinges of fire-resistant doors, and for the control of smoke that is included in EN 16034. Having said that, there is nothing to prevent a manufacturer from producing a fire-resistant and smoke-control door equipped with multiaxial hinges as long as that the door complies with EN 16034 and in particular paragraph 4.5.2.2 “Duration of self-closing against aging (corrosion)“. This paragraph states that: “fittings for doors and windows to which the product standards of Table 2 do not apply, such as multi-axial hinges, must prove compliance with EN 1760 (Fittings for windows and doors-Corrosion resistance)”.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF CHEMOLLI FIRE

Many door manufactures come to us for making tests for their products, finalized to be used as evidences for the certified body for CE marking, in order to obtain the fourfh digit.

We can carry out fire tests as follows:

activities for customers, where in accordance with the parties we insert products of the manufacturer of accessories;
dedicated activities, where we arrange everything , even the doors on which to mount accessories.
It goes without saying that the second type of activity, on the one hand guarantees results, time and ownership of evidence, on the other hand has higher costs.

We can also find evidence from our extensive database, possibly agreeing to allow the use of the same for marking or EXAP. In the case of evidence in our possession, the agreement is made directly with us. In the case of evidence from customers, we check whether there is a willingness to agree with the relevant guarantees.

On the subject of EXAP we can prepare the request to the laboratories.

On the subject of HPS, we can provide the drafting.

The fire tests can be according to EN1634-1 or EN1634-2, see the TESTING section of our website for specific insights.
